Eco-tourism is what brings the money but the hunting industry rarely mentions that because the NRA and the pro-kill Government wants the public to continue believing it's the "sportsman" who brings money. Then they say how they "boost" the economy yet with such small percentage of killers in America I would believe that is a bit of an exaggeration. Imagine how much money can be made by eco-tourism, bird watching, nature photography where MAJORITY of the population will enjoy but many do not want to get involved because of hunting that does takes place. They do love their euphemism such as "conservation", "wildlife management", "love and respect nature". Psychopaths too were good with being the "nice" people but behind the facade lies a soulless monster.


Also how is "conservation" of land doing the non-killing public any good if we can' even feel safe in the woods during the fall. There is no peace in there just death and destruction as millions of hunters heads out into the forest blasting their guns, crossbows and bows and arrows to KILL.

Overall "Conservation" is just a euphemism , another name for propagating "game" animals for "sportsman" to kill not only for today but for the future. There is nothing "beautiful" about terror, pain, suffering, bloodshed and death to the innocent because that is what hunters love to show on their videos and websites about "conservation". I wonder what it would look like if they showed what really happens to the animals they "conserve" . One last thing I forgot to mention many popular "wildlife group" hooking up with the hunters (easy money , quick fix and brainwashed to think if you kill some you will have plenty of animals for "all" to enjoy which we know is a farce). Organization such as Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation, World Wildlife Fund, Sierra Club, and of course Audubon.

Hunters Excuse- "They will spread diseases and we must control them"

First of all CWD the most serious of all disease were first spread by Elk and Deer farming when hunters were feeding rendered animals to grow large rack and because of hunting with their baiting and supplement feeding it continued to spread today though they banned feeding rendered animals they still supplement feed deer or bait when the deer congregates and that is how it's spread.. (although with the hunting public who knows if they still feed rendered animals)

Bovine TB is another disease that can kill human and animals and it's spread by supplement feeding and baiting

Wisconsin DNR is still allowing supplement feeding if the hunter pays more money and so long as you have sports hunting they will bait even if it's against the law in CWD zone.

In Wisconsin CWD are spreading yet there is still baiting deer and DNR is actually letting them with an extra charge. Why would they even do that if that is how CWD is spread? Ridiculous but not surprised at all!. As you read the article they also want to continue to supplement feed the deer for fear of deer numbers fa...lling (and ...all this time I thought hunting is about deer herd reduction) .

I believe even though today's  recreational hunting has got nothing to do with food we should all strive to go vegan if we are going to go out and defend our wildlife, seals, whales, cats or dogs.   It's a compassionate choice we do have today and there is no more  excuse for you can't love and care for cats , dogs, seal  or deer yet eat the body of a cow,pigs, chicken or even have dairy for all animals suffer and NO animals do not want to die.  Now  Of course most  of us know what goes on at the slaughterhouse and in slaughterhouse it's a horrible hell for the animals .  Many are trying to go for the "humane" meat though I don't believe in that lie for no animals wants to die and in the end all death is horrific but that does not mean the animals in the wild by the billions do not suffer for SPORTS and TROPHY or what ever sick thrills one  get out of killing innocent sentient beings.  It only takes a mind of a soulless humans to want to literally  go into the homes of the animals and kill  for the shear  fun of it. As far as the slaughterhouse and meat eating,  today many are also going vegetarian and transition into  veganism for we are all learning that animals are sentient beings that do want to live, they have their life, their families, their babies, group bonding and look at the deer with their Matriarch, when one dies another take over. That is a sentient beings.

We know that today's sport hunting has got nothing to do with "food",  *some* may "eat" the "back ribs" or "beef jerky" (pathetic) as the rest of the body is either dumped to the forest ground, the land fill or "give" the unsavory part to the pantries to poison them with non USDA meat that hunters "inspect" themselves.  HUNTERS LOVE THE "MEAT IN FREEZER" EXCUSE I hear it all the time as if that takes the focus off their horrific cruelty done in the name of sports and trophy.  It's like their crutch same as how they use poachers as a scapegoat the hunting industry and hunters know their lies for lies and hunters and synonymous.

How many do they leave behind in the forest ground or in rivers and streams dumped as if they were "nothing"



We know today's recreational hunters goes to their 7-11 for their egg and bacon sandwich and coffee



for their early morning kill or late afternoon at Wendy's for their "let the deer layup and die" lunch  and their fridge is stocked with chicken, pork, steak, rib eyes, dairy and other market bought food.  Recreational hunters  are not killing  out of survival or sustenance they  are killing for sports while they  drive their ATV, have their  fancy killing gear , face painted like they  are in a "war zone" to murder  bambies.  So "sportsman" cause pain and suffering indirectly in the slaughterhouse for food and in the home of the animals for "fun" .



Slaughterhouse is evil and horrendous  and sports hunting is just the same but I say this again,  with *SPORTS* Hunting (Killing) THERE IS NO LIMIT TO THE AMOUNT OF CRUELTY  THAT CAN BE INFLICTED ON THE ANIMALS IN THEIR OWN HOME-  Only small percentage of those  hunting is for sustenance the rest is for shear pleasure of killing call them "sportsman", "outdoorsman", "conservationist", for us they are simply wildlife killing  PSYCHOPATHS!

 

Lastly, let's all strive to be on a plant based diet, it's really sounds hypocritical to fight for one sentient beings while eating another even though fighting against sports hunting is not about Veganism.

Good job, you did the right thing in leaving her for the next day. She proved again that a gut shot deer if left alone will usually be found near a water source. Unfortunatly the coyotes are so bad here that a deer left overnight is usually coyote food by morning :(

It's all "congratulation" "good job" but these people do not feel any remorse to the suffering of the animals. People like us who are compassionate can feel their suffering and we would never put another living beings thru something we would never want to feel ourselves that is why bowhunters and sports hunters are all hearltess monsters!

Bowhunting of Elk outraged and shocked the public and bowhunters were not very happy

Bowhunters were not upset about the animal suffering because they know this is how bowhunted sentient being die. They are upset because the public has seen it with their own eyes how horrific the death is by an arrow and as you know bowhunters do their darnest to try and convince the public that bowhunted deer die a "quick death" and are "ethically harvested" as if the use of all those whitewash words are going to cover the truth. Truth needs to be shown and as horrible and sad their death was I am glad people saw it, I am glad photos was taken and was aired on the news. I did my share after a friend of mine Jason Miller told me about the Elk bowhunting and told me to go ASAP to grab the photos and put it into youtube and that is just what I did. The view counters went up very quickly and noticed that bowhunters has been talking about it too like I said not because of the concern for the suffering of the sentient animal but because the public saw and was disgusted by it and you know bowhunters reputation is already tarnished as is with so many other bowhunting incidents and the public are pretty much fed up with them.




Overall this is how millions of our wildlife dies in the forest and parks every year during bowhunting season. This is the pain and suffering the pro-kill Government put them thru so lowlife humans with the minds of serial killers can be "sportsman" and DNR can rake in their billions of dollars not to benefit the non-killing public but to benefit themselves by creating more land to use as a killing field and to propagate game animals to kill for recreation. As Anthony Marr said "We will never have a great Nation when our Nation is run by serial killers for fun".

Skagit County elk slaughter enrages readers

Fish and Wildlife need to step it up, do their job

The article on the elk slaughter near Concrete [“Trapping, killing of elk closes hunting,” NWWednesday, Dec. 29] highlights the mismanagement of our wildlife by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. This type of thing probably happens all too often, but this time it was captured on camera and in full view of the public.

The department said the bow-and-arrow wounding and slaughtering of the trapped elk was legal. If true, then we need new laws to prevent it.

Fish and Wildlife is responsible for the slaughter. In their never-ending quest to expand hunting opportunities, they relocated elk to the Skagit Valley. They then authorized this year’s hunt, after last year’s fiasco with muzzle-loader hunters.

According to the department’s own numbers, hunting mortality, including wounding loss and poaching, is by far the greatest source of elk mortality — 64 to 82 percent —of which poaching makes up 15 percent. This clearly defies the state mandate in RCW 77.04.012 to preserve, protect and perpetuate our state’s wildlife.

The hunters were unethical, but Fish and Wildlife should have never allowed the hunt in the first place. Then when it got really ugly, the agent should have stopped it.

State not as enlightened as I had thought

Wow. I moved up here from Texas and I keep thinking Washington in general — and the Seattle area in particular — is enlightened. I feel as if someone punched me in the stomach after reading this article.

What a disgusting spectacle of wanton cruelty that had nothing — nothing —to do with so-called sportsmanship. Seven animals were killed in circumstances resembling an appalling canned hunt, but what of those who were injured but managed to flee?

How long will it take them to die of blood loss and infection and exposure in the middle of winter? What of the female who was trailing loops of entrails?

How can this seem like an OK recreational activity to anyone? I am utterly sickened.

Rethinking how we treat wild animals

The article “Bow hunters shoot elk in Wash. pasture” [Seattletimes...com, Local News, Dec. 29] mentioned that a few of the animals had arrows embedded in their hides and were bleeding, but were still upright and running.

Sadly, this is an example of how these animals really die. It’s never as clean-cut as hunters would have you believe. In some cases, it can take days.

This wasn’t a case of necessity, it never is.

Bill Johnson said he didn’t necessarily regret the kills, however, some were messy and caused undue pain to the animals. This doesn’t sound like fun.

Maybe we need to rethink how wild animals are treated, and consider that we have to place some of the blame on ourselves for creating these situations in the first place.

We simply cannot push these animals in the corner in order to satisfy our own population growth.

A Veterinarian's Perspective on Bowhunting

What Happens to the Animals?

Bowhunters contend that although crippling is undesirable, most wounded animals do not die agonizing deaths, but can quickly recover. They feel that the broadhead arrow inflicts clean wounds that heal quickly. Bowhunters also like to suggest that a broadhead arrow is an efficient killing tool, with brand names such as the Ripper, Penetrator, and Terminator Doublecut.

The pretense seems to be that somehow animals develop hemophilia the instant they are struck; thus, they bleed to death: Stop all body functions with incredible speed—within 30 seconds in most cases, according to The Complete Book of Bowhunting. Contrary to these claims, most crippled animals do not recover from their wounds; rather, they routinely contract peritonitis or a septic infection.

Broadheads do not inflictclean wounds; they generally inflict dirty wounds. The main cause of infection,according to Benke, is today’s multi-bladed broadhead. As these arrows penetrate an
animal’s body, numerous hairs are clipped, often caught in the slots of the arrow blades, and distributed throughout the wound channel. The external wound opening then becomes sealed due to clotting and dried blood-matted hair. The bacteria from the clipped hairs begin multiplying in the wound. The amount of bacterial infection emanating from the wound depends on the wound location.

The animal’s general health is also an important factor affecting the time period it takes for the animal to finally die. Death eventually results one to two agonizing weeks later.

In order for an animal to bleed to death, its blood-clotting system must be overwhelmed. To overwhelm this system, the broadhead must penetrate the heart or sever one or more major blood vessels. If these are not lacerated, an animal cannot bleed to death— the body’s natural blood-clotting system sees to that.

Benke estimates that 20% to 30% of deer struck by arrows die from hemorrhaging and that 10% sustain wounds that probably heal, leaving 60% to 65% of the deer to die from infections.
Benke asserts: the average time in which broadheads cause death must be measured in weeks or days rather than in seconds, minutes, or even hours. Sadly, it is not only the crippled animals who suffer, but those hit and retrieved successfully as well. According to experts clean kills are a rarity. While the deer who are hit and retrieved successfully are not fortunate, they fare better than those who have been wounded and left to suffer. A comment from an experienced bowhunter who writes in Fins & Feathers magazine

(March 1987) assumes that the elapsed time between the initial wounding of an animal
and the animal’s final death is exceedingly long—even if the hit occurs in vital (heart or
lung) areas. The rule of thumb for bowhunters has long been that they should wait 30 to 45 minuteson heart and lung hits, an hour or more on a suspected liver hit, 8 to12 hours on paunch hits, and follow immediately on hindquarter and other muscle-only hits to keep the
wound open and bleeding. Bowhunting literature serves as its own indictment. The book Bowhunting for Whitetails says: It’s important to give them (the deer) time to stiffen and die - 20 minutes at a minimum, 30 minutes even better... just hang back and have a smoke. There is absolutely no sure way to kill a deer instantly with a bow!

The broadhead arrow is notorious for its inherent inefficiency and singular capacity to
cripple, wound, inflict pain, and prolong the suffering of animals. All 50 states have banned the .22 caliber rifle for big-game hunting because of its inadequate killing power. Given that .22 rifles are far superior to compound bows in terms of killing capability, one can infer that states have failed to institute and implement responsible and consistent hunting regulations.

A Veterinarian’s Perspective on Bowhunting

According to Steve Nusbaum MA, DVM, if the damage to the vital area is less than
severe, and if an arrow nicks an auricle rather than cuts through both ventricles, the
blessing of shock-induced analgesia (a deadening or absence of the sense of pain
without loss of consciousness) to set in can take a long time.

Consider the physiology of the deer who dies by suffocation, choking on its own blood,
or the deer who dies after an arrow penetrates the diaphragm. The presence of a highly
sophisticated nervous system in deer certainly suggests that their nervous systems
perform the same functions as human nervous systems. The presence of the same
neurochemicals in deer as in humans similarly shows that they feel pain as we do.

In recent years there has been a major shift in the way the scientific community
understands the mental life of animals, particularly mammals. Presently, researchers in
a variety of animal-related disciplines generally agree that in addition to being sentient,
mammals are consciously aware and have feelings and emotions; even though they are
more rudimentary than those of humans.

Mammals, including deer, are presently understood by scientists to have the capacity to
think. Numerous studies indicate that the mental harm that is done to an animal placed
in a stressful situation may be more injurious than that done to a person in a similar
situation because the animal’s mind, in varying degrees, focuses more on the immediate
than the distant. Thus, an animal, unlike a person, is less aware that the present anxiety
it is experiencing may be temporary. Not only does bowhunting cause real physical pain and suffering, the deer’s mental suffering is just as real, and in its own way, may be just as painful.

Bowhunting as a Deer Management Tool

The use of bowhunting as a method to control deer population densities is ineffective:
*In a February 1988 report on bowhunting at Rock Cut State Park in Illinois,
Department of Conservation biologist Tom Beissel, states: …this report recognizes that bowhunting has never been an effective tool for deer control…
* In Texas, which has more deer than any other state, Parks and Wildlife biologist
Horace Gore comments: You cannot call bowhunting a population control
measure, it is a recreational pursuit. In fact, he adds: We do not advocate
bowhunting when the objective is controlling the population.
* According to John Parker, Area Wildlife Manager for the Minnesota Department
of Natural Resources, only 3 deer were killed from the 29 bow permits issued in
the 1989 bow hunt in the Minnesota River Valley Area.
* Larry Gillette, Wildlife Biologist for Hennepin Parks, acknowledges that
bowhunters fail to retrieve a substantial number of deer they shoot and does not
advise the use of archery hunting to control deer populations.
* The Eagan City Council decided in 1993 not to allow bowhunting. This was
largely due to FATE’s (Friends of Animals and Their Environment) efforts. An
article in Bowhunter’s Hotline (Sept. 1993) regarding Eagan’s decision reported
that the Mayor of Eagan had supported bowhunting in the past; however, his
mind was changed about the sport due to the information provided by FATE.
The Mayor of Eagan, Tom Egan was quoted in the article as saying: FATE
provided me with a lot of valuable information, and I have always supported
bowhunting, but I no longer feel the rationale that it’s an efficient management
tool outweighs the safety and cruelty aspects. Also, the Mayor was reported as
saying: I think if we set loose every bowhunter in Eagan, we still wouldn’t reduce
the deer population, and the city would be less safe. He added: It isn’t feasible
for every bowhunter to shoot and retrieve five deer. They might each shoot and
wound five, but not shoot and recover five.

The above listed items clearly show the inefficiencies and ineffectiveness of bowhunting
as a population control method and deer management tool.

The Inescapable Conclusion

Those who indulge in the antiquated bow-and-arrow type of hunting knowingly commit
each living creature they hit to lingering agony, and this is true whether the wound is
eventually fatal or not. These animals endure prolong suffering before they collapse and
die.

As this report has shown, the following facts about bowhunting are inescapable:
* Bowhunting is inhumane and wasteful.
* Bowhunters do not want to talk about the wounding issue and archery wounding
is the most denied problem in bowhunting.
* Wounding and crippling losses are inevitable.
*Shot placement is, for all practical purposes, random due to the difficulty in
shooting arrows accurately. There is absolutely no sure way to kill a deer
instantly with a bow
* More often than not, poorly hit deer are lost and not recovered.
* The main cause of infection in the wound is today’s multi-bladed broadhead
arrow
* Almost all abdominally shot deer die a slow death from peritonitis with the
average time of death measured in agonizing days or weeks rather than in
minutes or hours.
* The use of bowhunting as a method to control deer population densities is
ineffective. Bowhunting is not a population control measure; it is a recreational
pursuit.

Humans are provided with the capacity to imagine for a variety of reasons. And we have
the capacity to imagine empathetically for a singular reason—we can appreciate the pain
of others without experiencing it firsthand. Balancing the needs of humans and animals
is a difficult and complex task. If communities decide that deer herds must be managed,
it is reprehensible to reduce the taking of animal life to a recreational activity for
bowhunting enthusiasts. Instead, a truly humane solution must be found—whether that
solution is to hire professional sharpshooters to observe the herd, taking the old and
infirm, or to implement an immunocontraception program for the herd.
