Deer Birth Control Could Prevent Collisions

“Sorry deer, not in the mood tonight, or this season, or for the next five years, in fact” said the doe on birth control.
A birth control injection for deer puts them completely out of the mood to mate for up to five years without a booster. GonaCon, as the birth control is called, even eliminates dangerous and destructive courtship behaviors responsible for the autumn increase in collisions between cars and deer.
The birth control shot is actually a vaccine that causes the deer to produce antibodies against a key hormone, Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which triggers production of sex hormones. GnRH kicks in when days get shorter and triggers many animals from northern latitudes to get feisty for the mating season.

Other deer birth control vaccines prevent pregnancy, but they don't stop the animals from exhibiting mating behaviors, said David Goldade of the U. S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service/Wildlife Services National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) in Fort Collins, Colo., where GonaCon was developed.
"That opens the door to dangerous situations in which males chase females across the highway. With GonaCon, however, vaccinated deer don't even try to mate," Goldade said in a press release.
Goldade recently reported on the new vaccine at the 242nd National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society.
The vaccine causes deer to produce antibodies that destroy the GnRH before it can ever trigger the sex hormones. USDA studies on white-tailed deer, free-ranging California ground squirrels, captive Norway rats, domestic and feral swine and wild horses have shown GonaCon to be effective in a wide range of animals.
The birth control vaccine could even be useful for pets and domesticated animals that have not been spayed or neutered. In cats, for example, scent-spraying, fighting, wandering, and caterwauling could be controlled.
The vaccine was designed to control the wild deer population, but there are a few drawbacks. Though it is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency, it must also be registered with state agencies. So far, only Maryland and New Jersey have approved its use.
Also, the vaccine has to be injected into a captured and sedated deer by a USDA or state game and fish department staff member. Capturing, sedating, and vaccinating hundreds of thousands of deer would be time-consuming and expensive.

A poem written by a good friend of mine. Humans with even an ounce of compassion are fed up with the torture and killing of innocent wildlife for greed, profit and amusement. Every year deer-vehicle collisions take a huge toll in lives, money and time.

Last year there were: 1

    * An estimated actual 1,500,000 deer-vehicle collisions.
    * Over 110 deaths and tens of thousands of injuries.
    * Over $1.2 billion in property damage.
    * Escalating insurance premiums.
    * Increasing carcass removal costs.
    * Increasing accident investigation costs.

In a report published in September, 2009, State Farm indicated that the deer-vehicle collision frequency across the United States has jumped 18% in the last five years! To put it another way, one of these unfortunate encounters occurs every 26 seconds (although they are much more likely during the last three months of the year and in the early evening). The average property damage cost of these incidents was $3,050, up 3.4 percent from a year ago.

The report includes a U.S. map showing the percentage increase in each state. For example, California (22%), Oregon (9%), Washington (19%), Colorado (19%), Nebraska (54%), Iowa (17%), Minnesota (9%), Illinois (3%), Michigan (14%), New York (28%), North Carolina (33%), Florida (38%), Alabama (16%), Texas (33%).

For example, there are roadside reflector technologies such as the Streiter-lite system, which uses reflected light from the headlights of oncoming cars to alert deer. This system has been installed in numerous locations around the world. Its effectiveness in reducing deer-vehicle collisions has been studied, showing results of 78-90% (see graph at right which shows accident rates before and after installation of reflectors).9

There is a Strieter-lite system installation in Owego, New York, just 30 miles South of Ithaca. According to the Owego traffic engineer, the reduction of deer-vehicle collisions has been high, nearly 100%.10 The cost of installing this system may also be reduced by federal grant support.11

Another promising technology, the Roadside Animal Detection System (RADS), takes a different approach. RADS uses radio sensors to detect large animals approaching a roadway. If an animal gets too near a road, the sensor activates a warning signal, alerting drivers to be cautious and slow down. One study in Switzerland found that such animal detection systems produced a reduction in collisions of up to 82 percent.12

Fencing is another proven alternative which can be used on its own or in combination with the options shown above. According to several studies, wildlife fencing, if used correctly, has the documented potential to reduce deer-vehicle collsions dramatically. One study in Banff, Alberta, for example, showed that fencings systems reduced collisions by 80%.13
There is also data suggesting that vehicle speed is correlated with the rate of deer-vehicle collisions, so more strict enforcement of the speed limit may be helpful. Community education programs that teach drivers how to drive more safely and avoid deer-vehicle collisions could further contribute to a reduction of collision risk.
Each of these alternatives to a bait and shoot program offers a documented potential to significantly reduce the risk of deer-vehicle collsions, and without negative side-effects, including the safety risks associated with the annual discharge of weapons in a densely settled community. Mayor Gilmore has spoken at a public meeting of allocating initial funding of $50,000 to a deer killing program. And as outside experts who have spoken at meetings have confirmed, a bait and shoot program is not a one-time solution, but rather a yearly endeavor.14 Thus, the public safety risks, the cost to tax payers, and the moral weight of killing human-habituated deer would continue to accrue year after year.
We can do better. Resources invested in sensible, nonviolent alternatives are a far better investment as they will provide immediate results, and will continue to offer value to the community for years to come.

Why, why, WHY do they enjoy sharing such disgusting photographs of death, the animals with gray in the eyes and blood in the mouth? I have seen Bowhunters when they should at least attempt to put second shot on the deer even though that still not an a gurantee fast death ( watch this many do not take the second shot or take too long to do so because they are busy cheering and in their ectacy and the deer regain use of their leg to run off which of course some bowhunters will leave them overnight or go home for lunch or supper to come back for the deer when they are sure the deer has died click here. A 9 year-old-girl who was tragically shot in a hunting accident will be laid to rest Tuesday. Almost 500 people are expected to attend a private funeral for Soren Dahlstrom. It will be held at the family farm in Hockley County at 8 p.m.

The Hunting Industry tries to say "we need to get the kids out of the house, stop having them play video games, keep them off drugs etc etc etc ...." They act as if being outdoors is to kill a living sentient beings (hunting) and that it will be the "only way" to "keep kids off drugs and video games" (lol). I know SO MANY young kids enjoying outdoors without killing and they are staying off drugs, PLUS GUESS WHAT? they are still ALIVE!!!! The "U.S. Sportsman Alliance Group on their website says there are as many death by lightining every year in the U.S as there are death by hunting yet they use that to mislead the public as lightning is part of nature, putting lethal weapons into the hands of children to kill innocent animals is NOT. Death by lighting yearly in the U.S is 50 and about 100 injuries. I don't know about you but seems to me there are a lot more death by hunting accidents many involving children even adults so more lies. I believe even though today's recreational hunting has got nothing to do with food we should all strive to go vegan if we are going to go out and defend our wildlife, seals, whales, cats or dogs. It's a compassionate choice we do have today and there is no more excuse for you can't love and care for cats , dogs, seal or deer yet eat the body of a cow,pigs, chicken or even have dairy for all animals suffer and NO animals do not want to die. Streiter-lite system, It's been proven to work very well to reduce Deer Vehicle Accidents.

For example, there are roadside reflector technologies such as the Streiter-lite system, which uses reflected light from the headlights of oncoming cars to alert deer. This system has been installed in numerous locations around the world. Its effectiveness in reducing deer-vehicle collisions has been studied, showing results of 78-90% (see graph at right which shows accident rates before and after installation of reflectors).⁹

There is a Strieter-lite system installation in Owego, New York, just 30 miles South of Ithaca. According to the Owego traffic engineer, the reduction of deer-vehicle collisions has been high, nearly 100%.¹⁰ The cost of installing this system may also be reduced by federal grant support.¹¹

There is also data suggesting that vehicle speed is correlated with the rate of deer-vehicle collisions, so more strict enforcement of the speed limit may be helpful. Community education programs that teach drivers how to drive more safely and avoid deer-vehicle collisions could further contribute to a reduction of collision risk.

Each of these alternatives to a bait and shoot program offers a documented potential to significantly reduce the risk of deer-vehicle collsions, and without negative side-effects, including the safety risks associated with the annual discharge of weapons in a densely settled community. Mayor Gilmore has spoken at a public meeting of allocating initial funding of $50,000 to a deer killing program. If I had a dime for every "they'll starve to death" I be a billionair. First of all I don't see any DNR selling tags to kill the "starving and sickly deer" do you? Plus how do they know which deer will "starve to death" when they shoot them and also who is killing the deer's natual predators such as coyotes and wolves? Coyotes and wolves goes after the sickly to keep the strong yes they go after babies too and it's sad but that is part ot the nature way to keep healthy eco- balance not bunch of "sportsman" killing animals for shere pleasure even the babies, yearlings, pregnant does and of course the beautiful buck.

As millions of hunters heads into the woods the deer become very stressed which causes them to be unable to eat, the hunters causes the animal family to separate which means the yearling will lose the warmth of their mother or the matriarchs if the yearling lost their mother from hunters. I think it was back in 2007 that youtube came along and it became a haven for hunters to "show off" their barbarism and killing. Before youtube came along and with hunting snuff videos( which of course most non-killers never bother looking at) the public always believed in the lies of hunters on how "ethical" they are and how the animals die a "quick painless death" (maybe with bullet 80% of the times) but DEFINITELY NOT with a bow and arrow this I have learned. I have seen quiet a few slob shotgun hunters who will shoot to cause pain and to laugh and had to wait for the deer to die as well but majority it was hit and dead exception is during "deer drive" on the other hand with bowhunting the animals death is by hemorrhaging which means to bleed to death. The shots are hardly ever "well placed" I often hear bowhunters say "way to the back" "too much to the front", "jump the string" "I think I got the gut", "He got scraped most sure he is alive still" (yeah sure). Now with youtube (A haven for hunters, "Outdoorsman" "sportsman" and many sadist monster organization we are learning. BTW Hunting forums are another great place to learn how they brag and "show off" their murder gallery of death and destruction.

Recreational hunters, INTENTIONALLY go out there to kill for fun with no care in the world even with a stuffed fridge and belly. There is absolutely NO limit to the amount of cruelty that hunters can inflict upon the innocent sentient beings , they can spine shoot them for the video (got lots of that), they can shoot the animals in anyway they want because in American cruelty to forest animals is considered "sports", an "outdoorsman" or "conservation" ( all that euphemistic garbage). Now that part is cleared lets get to excuse #2. "Have you see what those wolves do to the animals rip them to shred alive" etc etc. Yes I have and horrible to watch but that is part of life and death in the wild, some animal will succumb quickly to the predators kill some may take longer but their killing is out of hunger and their prey are the weaker, the starving, the smaller to keep the strong healthy genes where the "sportsman" do the opposite. Now let me tell you what happens to the animals when sports hunters (bowhunters especially) leave the animals to die sometimes for hours and even overnight, you always hear the hunters says "I hope the coyote or wolves did not get to them" meaning the animals could not even defend themselves in their wound dying they were eaten alive by the carnivores of the wild and all because of sick humans who wants to kill for sports and trophy. The does and yearlings they wont bother to search if they know it would be too hard to find but the big antlered "trophy" deer yes they will go all out, even half eaten they will bring home the deer for the sake of the antler. Pitiful isn't it? In this video you will see many talk about the "wait" which means the recommended waiting time for the animal to die from bowhunting usually minimum of 30-45 minutes. Bowhunters tries to deny this to the public but I watch, I listen carefully to EVERY WORDS that bowhunters says and don't miss a thing. Is there any remorse or guilt from them? ABSOLUTELY NONE! Instead it's the high fives and fist pumping as they speak in whisper not to spook the stil alive but suffering deer any further. Imagine a human capable of cheering as the animal is dying, an animal with the same physiology of humans is dying some drowning in their own blood, hemorrhaging to death or what ever horrific suffering that comes from a bow and arrow whether it's compound or crossbow all death to an animal by an arrow is never "quick" and it's the kind of death not one of these killers would ever want to experience.
Now lets talk about the fawns, yes they kill fawns with spots but in the hunting industry they want to make sure you get the female not the male for they need the male for future trophy deer. (click here) Plus they want to save enough food for the does to have more babies and the growing fawn buck for future killing (they call it fawn recruits). Yearlings too, yearlings are very close to their siblings but in the bowhunting public ( I especially witness the killings of babies by bowhunters) they will injure or kill the button buck but mostly the female yearling because I see other hunters comments of anger not because of the yearling killing but because of the "taking out" of "future trophy deer". When one of the sibling is injured or killed the other will follow as if grieving. The hunting industry knows about Compensatory Rebound Effect (CRE) meaning that the surviving deer will have more food and food is what cause more fawn births (twins and triplets) where if there is not enough food the womb will "eat up" the embryo or fail to ovulate. Spine shot is a terrifying death for the deer and a whole lot of amusement for the bowhunters. Imagine how many deer, even fawns are spine shot so bowhunters can sit and watch the dance of death that can last for hours, one said they can suffer this way overnight. In Sports hunting there is no limit to the extent of cruelty that can be inflicted on the innocent sentient being because recreational hunting is legalized animals cruelty, there is no anti-cruelty law (not that we would want another euphemistic garbage), no one hears their cries, there is no camera except the ones the hunters put on their tree stand so they can video tape the snuffing of innocent sentient forest creatures and upload into youtube which is pretty dumb because people like me are watching and will expose the horrendous cruelty to educate the public.

"I had a buddy that spined a calf elk. Shots where we go are few and far between so he only carried 3 arrows for a morning hunt. First one was a spine. On the second shot the calf lurched and it ended up grazing its neck. He moved in to ten yards and tried to put the final arrow in his chest as the calf rolled onto its back but ended up a bit back and hit the liver. The entire time the calf was calling for its mother who remained 40 yards away not wanting to leave. He had two choices. Let it slowly die calling to its mother, or use a knife. He did the humane thing and took out his knife. Not the ideal situation for his first elk with a bow but using a knife in this case was the humane thing to do."

Good job, you did the right thing in leaving her for the next day. She proved again that a gut shot deer if left alone will usually be found near a water source. Unfortunatly the coyotes are so bad here that a deer left overnight is usually coyote food by morning :(

It's all "congratulation" "good job" but these people do not feel any remorse to the suffering of the animals. Bowhunters says "Rage is like hitting a deer with an ax"

Reading about "rage" broadheads from other bowhunters is very disturbing not only only the savagery of this arrow but the inconsistency of the results and how the animals are nothing more then objects to "slice and dice". I hear how it does not "pass thru" because it hits a bone, break a rib, it "snaps off" some says it leaves such a large hole that even if the deer did not bleed to death they died from the guts coming out. The video is very graphic and is of a doe being hit by a rage and she is bawling and crying as the bowhunters continue to laugh and video tape. Below are some of bowhunters comments on "rage" broadheads that I found on their forum notice there is not one single concern for the animal suffering instead their concern is finding the deer especially if it's a trophy deer

"Shot a doe tonight with a 2 blade rage at 25 yards quatering away. She ran maybe 15 yards before crashing. It was not a pass threw, but it did its job. I think it broke 5 or 6 ribs on the way in. "darrink

Arrow (Maxima 350, 28.5", 62 lb bow) broke two ribs on entrance (4.5" entrance hole), went through the lungs, broke one rib in the front of the chest cavity, then broke the off side front leg joint. The arrow never actually came out of the deer, but there was plenty of blood from just the entrance hole." ACK

"I switched to rage broadheads mid season last year and was not able to use them. I shot a doe last week with the 1.5" three blade rage broadheads. The shot caught the liver and part of the stomach. The deer went less than 100 yards and when I got to it the stomach was sticking out the entry hole the size of a volleyball. I found it less than 30 minutes after the shot (it had nothing to do with being dead and bloated). I'm hooked!

I've heard of guys who hit no vital organs and the deer went about 75 yards and died because the hole is just too big. I don't think the broadhead itself can fail, other than the blades opening in your quiver. I also shot a grouse with one and took sliced its head right off." walleyeguy_12

I shot a nine point on october 4 of this year. I hit it low in the front shoulder and didn't get any vitals. I watched the buck run for about 400 yards then enter a corn field. i waited about 2 hours and went to find it. It ran a total of a mile and a half befor i found it dead in a ditch. As Steve Hindi of SHARK mentioned that the bear named "Cubby" when shot into the lung drowned in his own blood and that is one of the main way our bowhunted animals die. Whether it's a hit to the gut, lung, liver, and other parts of the body of the animals there is hardly ever a "quick death" in bowhunting that is why in bowhunting websites they have a recommended waiting time of 30-45 minutes before tracking the animals. The Animal rights activists that are protesting against Troy Gentry playing at Arizona's state Fair says "there was no chase, there was no hunt" which in fact describes exactly how bear and deer bowhunting works in America because 90% of the killing are done by a tree stand or blinds with baits and attractant to bring the animals to them, then they kill so overall there is not much difference of what Troy Gentry did and what 13 millions sports hunters of America does to our wildlife. Also US Fish and Wildlife is a hypocrite being that they kill billions of innocent wildlife by the use f bowhunting, shotgun, trapping, snaring and shooting by planes such as in wolves. I like to remind everyone do not pay attention to recreational hunter who tries to use the "true hunter" , "real hunter", "ethical hunter" excuses to act like they are not the same as Troy Gentry when we know damn well they are especially the bowhunters. Tip as for Avoiding Deer Collisions

* While you should always be aware of your surroundings, keep an especially keen eye around dusk and dawn. These are the periods of time when deer crossings occur most often. It can also be more difficult to see at dusk or dawn, since it is neither completely light or dark outside.
* One of the best ways to avoid deer collisions is to drive at a safe speed, especially in areas with deer warning signs. These signs are strategically placed in areas known to be frequented by wildlife. Follow the speed limit and you’ll give yourself enough time to react should a deer or any other animal cross your path.
* Whenever possible, use your high-beams when driving in areas with wildlife. Not only will they provide the light necessarily to see the road, but they can also help illuminate a deer’s eyes from afar, giving you proper warning. Flashing your lights at other drivers can alert them to a deer’s presence, but do so with caution, so not to distract them.
* If you do come across a dear, firmly apply your brakes, but try not to slam on them or swerve into another lane. While deer collisions are extremely dangerous, drivers losing control of their car to avoid them can be just as deadly.
* You could consider investing in one of the “deer whistle” products. These whistles emit ultra-sonic noise when driving over a specific speed and they are supposedly only audible to animals. Unfortunately, studies have shown them to be largely ineffective at minimizing accidents.
* Should you see a deer getting ready to cross the road or one that is already in the middle of it, loudly honk your vehicle’s horn. This will scare most deer and they’ll quickly make their way back into the woods. It also helps alert other drivers nearby to the situation.
* Finally, always keep an eye on the vehicles in front of you. Be prepared to stop suddenly, as there’s no telling when a herd may decide to cross, forcing the drivers in front of you to slam on their brakes.

If you see that a car accident with a deer is unavoidable, do not swerve, brace yourself and apply your brakes. Hitting a deer head on is a much less severe accident than swerving off the road or into an oncoming car. Most car accidents involving deer only leave minor cosmetic damage, however it can damage your radiator leading to an overheat and serious damage to your motor. If you think your damage may be severe, use caution getting out to inspect, as an injured deer may regain consciousness and attack. Otherwise, drive a safe distance away, pull off to the side of the road, and then inspect. If your radiator is leaking fluid, turn your car off immediately and have it towed to a garage. Your insurance company may require a police report to file a claim for coverage.

Hi, as some of you know I have had a dialogue on and off with Sara Schaefer, the DNRE Supervisor for Southwest MI. As you also know, Sara has told me (written emails) that GH does NOT have a deer overpopulation problem but a deer browse/social carrying capacity problem. And as you know, we brought Sandy Baker (leading expert in the nation on deer behavior and how to garden in areas where deer browse) to town in August 2009.

Sara also told me that in the DNRE's opinion, Ottawa County has too many deer so even though she does not think there are too many deer in the city of GH - she accepts any help she can get with lowering her numbers. She does NOT dispute that the DNRE policy mismanages the herd(s) nor did she disagree with compensatory rebound or the fact that the herds are artificially propagated to serve the hunting community.

That said, my latest conversation with her has centered around contraception for urban deer. When we first met Sara three or four years ago at the first public meeting in GH City Hall, she refused to even address the issue of birth control or take questions from the audience about it. You can see from her response below that she seems to be coming around somewhat. I have tried to address her reasons for continuing to not embrace contraception more than she already has.

It is long but those of you I sent this to are people I think should know and have this info.

As I promised, I am responding to your comments on deer contraception. Please review the letter to the editor below written by Jay F. Kirkpatrick, Ph.D., the Director of The Science and Conservation Center, who is recognized as one of the worlds leading authorities on wildlife contraception. His letter is in response to a letter written by Jerry Feaser, Press Secretary of the Pa Game Commission. I also attached an article in Microsoft Word on deer contraception by Peter Muller, for your review. I think this letter and article will address some of your concerns about contraception.

You wrote:

Let me try to address your specific objections to contraception below:

The issue is that it works fine with penned deer that can be contained in one area and individually identified (ear tags).

There are several published, peer reviewed, scientific studies on deer contraception (see references in J. Kirkpatrick's letter) showing population reductions of 60% and 40% of free-ranging deer populations. Some of these studies used ear tags and some didn't. There's really no credible scientific debate anymore that deer contraception doesn't work in urban/suburban environments to reduce and manage deer populations effectively - it's a fact.

The contraception technique is only effective when you dose each doe multiple times over its lifetime.

This is true, but it's a safe and effective method of population reduction and management. Current hunting/culling programs require lethal weapons to be used every year in densely populated residential communities putting residents at serious risk. In addition, Allen Rutberg Ph.D., Research Professor, Center for Animals and Public Policy, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, currently has a four year vaccine in field studies, which, if successful, will only require the vaccine to be administered once every four years. Furthermore, hunting has proven to be ineffective in reducing deer populations, i.e. not enough deer are killed to offset compensatory rebound, and is why once started, it has to be continued Ad infinitum.

With wild deer, they move around so much that it would be too difficult to make sure you get each individual each year.

A deer's home range is usually small, and typically less than a square mile. That data is based on deer home range studies in heavily forested and/or rural areas, or as you termed "wild deer" populations. Deer typically don't move around all that much. In addition, in urban/suburban discrete populations, the deer home ranges are typically much smaller, i.e. they are not as free-ranging. These deer families are much more contained by roads, fences, homes and urban sprawl. So deer movement is not an major obstacle for a successful urban/suburban contraception program. I for one, know several of the deer families in the areas from where the GH City Council receives the most complaints.

There are a number of successful strategies for contraception darting:

1) Ear tagging, but the down side of ear tagging is that it's resource intensive and takes more time.

2) Paint darts. These darts inject the vaccine and mark the deer with paint to identify them, so that you don't dart them twice.

3) Just dart all the deer you see. You will probably dart some deer twice, but the vaccine isn't that expensive, and it doesn't harm the deer. It's not necessary to contracept every deer in the community for a contraception program to be successful. That being said, if you spend some time studying the deer families within an urban/suburban community, you will get to know the deer groups, their home ranges, and where they bed down, and can effectively dart the majority of the population w/o ear tags or paint darts. Again, I for one know several of the deer families in the areas from where GH City Council receives the most complaints.

4) There are also some baiting strategies for effective deer darting.

(In the Bucks County Courier Times, January 15, 2007 the following letter by Jerry Feaser, Press Secretary for the Pennsylvania Game Commission appeared. Because of space contraints, the paper could not publish the response of Jay Kirkpatrick, Ph.D., a prize winning wildlife researcher with more than 20 years experience in the filed of contraception and wildlife reproduction. His response in its entirety follows Feaser's letter.)

The game commission is responsible for conserving and managing all wild birds and mammals in Pennsylvania and conducts many wildlife conservation programs for the public. Despite these efforts that benefit all Pennsylvanians, it is true that the agency does not receive any state tax payer funds and is supported by hunters’ dollars.

However, it is not true that the commission does not sterilize deer because hunters do not want fewer deer. Hunters have successfully reduced deer populations in most rural areas. When addressing deer conflicts in more developed areas, the agency and hunters have maintained a consistent effort to reduce deer populations with hunting and non-hunting options.

Recent research has concluded that it is unlikely that using the current sterilization methods alone will reduce the free-ranging deer population that exists throughout Pennsylvania, including lower Bucks County. In addition, fertility control is limited to experimental situations because the FDA has not ruled the drugs safe and effective for use in wildlife and are not available for use with free-ranging deer. Sterilization also is expensive with an estimated cost of up to $1,000 per deer. Research also suggests that use of hunting, alone or in combination with other management actions, may be the only way to effectively reduce free-ranging deer populations.

As part of our urban deer management plan, the Game Commission is developing a written policy on fertility control and will update the policy as science and research provides new information. For the game commission, the choice is clear: hunting costs communities nothing, and is the best option when compared to an unproven, experimental procedure that is cost prohibitive.

I shall respond...(to Feaser's letter on "sterilization." ) That said, or written, please keep in mind that journalism regarding this subject has been, for a decade or more, embarrassingly shabby, inaccurate and misleading and for the most part reflects a lot of passionate opinions and theories but little of factual substance.

At the outset, I would like to make two points clear. First, I do not advocate the use of contraception for deer, at Tyler Park or anywhere else. I merely convey facts, data, and scientifically-supported conclusions. Urban and suburban deer problems are local issues and it is not my domain to advocate any management approach outside my home city here in Billings. The Tyler deer are someone else's deer and someone else is responsible for decisions about their management. Second, I do not deal in opinions. I deal only in facts, derived from controlled studies, appropriate analysis and peer-reviewed published data. With that stated, let's examine the article's salient points.

To begin with, "sterilization" is an inaccurate and misleading term. Contraception, which is what the debate is all about, is reversible fertility inhibition, but not sterilization. Spaying is sterilization; neutering is sterilization, but condoms, pills, diaphragms, IUDs, and immunocontraception (vaccines) are reversible and by definition, contraception. The paper's editors, and both authors should be more careful about their use of inaccurate terms.

Mr. Feaser's letter is a masterpiece of hyperbole, misinformation and dissembling. First, he makes no distinction between urban/suburban deer and rural deer and the contraceptive technology, which was developed only for deer herds where traditional management methods are not deemed legal, wise, safe or publicly acceptable. The failure to make this clear at the outset pits the hunting community against the broad concept of management by contraception.

Second, Mr. Feaser contends that "...the agency have maintained a consistent effort to reduce deer populations with hunting and non-hunting options." We all understand hunting, but I, at least, am unaware of the non-hunting efforts to reduce deer populations. He had every right to make this assertion, but then should be compelled to explain what those non-hunting efforts are.

Next he states "Recent research has concluded that it is unlikely that using current sterilization [sic] methods alone will reduce the free-ranging deer population that exists throughout Pennsylvania, including lower Bucks County." This sentence is filled with hyperbole and distractions from the issues at hand. First, he continues to label reversible contraception as "sterilization" and that is really not a terribly complex construct. Second, he once again mixes the rural deer population of all of Pennsylvania and Bucks County with discrete urban/suburban populations, apparently in an attempt to mislead. At no time, at no venue, have I or any other scientist involved in wildlife contraception suggested that contraception (or sterilization!) could solve "Pennsylvania's or Bucks County's deer population" problems. The technology in question was developed for discrete urban/suburban populations where traditional lethal methods are not deemed legal, wise, safe or publicly acceptable.

Second, he cites no references for this "research". I, on the other hand, will be happy to cite the results of actual research. Naugle at al. 2002. Reproduction (Suppl. 60): 143-153 reports on a deer contraceptive project being conducted on Fire ISland National Seashore (FINS), for the National Park Service. There are about 15 communities interspersed along the National Seashore's 30 mile length and thus far immunocontraception has reduced the population by approximately 60%. That's not an opinion. That's fact. So that I may not be accused of hyperbole too, let me make it clear here that contraception is not a good way to quickly reduce a population of deer, or any long-lived species. It can achieve zero population growth relatively fast but it takes some time to actually reduce the population, but it can - and has - been done. Next, one might go read Rutberg et al. 2004. Biological Conservation 116:243-250. This peer-reviewed paper describes a deer contraceptive project being conducted for the U. S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology, in Gaithersburg, MD. This population of deer has been reduced by approximately 40% through the exclusive use of contraception. I could cite several other papers but these will suffice for now. Incidentally, although it hasn't been published yet, the Gaithersburg data also indicates a decrease in deer-car collisions coincident with the reduction in deer population as a result of contraception.

There have been many other deer contraceptive projects, conducted by other government agencies (USDA) and academic institutions and proprietary companies, but none have been conducted longitudinally, over long periods of time, and at the population level. These other studies have tested safety, efficacy, and so forth, but not population effects.

Now Mr. Feaser next moves on the foil that most opponents use to discredit deer contraception. He states that "...FDA has not ruled the drugs safe and effective for wildlife..." and that they have to be used "experimentally". That is true as far as it goes, but Mr. Feaser fails to tell the entire story, and in doing this misrepresents what is actually going on. At least at present FDA is the regulatory authority for wildlife contraceptives (that responsibility will be shifted to the EPA, probably within the next 12 months). The usual procedure for the development of a new drug within FDA is to generate "pilot" data, which provides some reasonable but no ultimate data regarding safety and then apply for something referred to as an Investigational New Animal Drug (INAD) exemption. THis document, which exists for the immunocontraceptive in question here, "authorizes" the use of the drug by the FDA, in experimental settings. This is almost exactly what takes place with new cancer drugs for humans. Relatively few cancer drugs utilized for human medicine are FDA "approved" but rather they are used "experimentally". Thus, the FDA has deemed the immunocontraceptive in question as safe enough to use experimentally and we use it under FDA authorization. Now, the second step for the development of a commercial drug is, if no problems emerge from the use under the INAD, to move from an INAD to something known as an New Animal Drug Application (NADA). This step requires millions of dollars and many many years of additional research. We have never taken this step, for several reasons. First, there is no promise of financial return for a wildlife contraceptive. The market is just too small, thus the investment of millions of dollars just won't happen. Second, it was our philosophy that because most of the research on this immunocontraceptive (something known as porcine zona pellucida vaccine, or PZP) was originally funded with public money, over 35 years, the outcome of that research already belongs to the public and should not be used to generate profit for a proprietary company. That is a private philosophy, common to our research group and certainly not a universal attitude among scientists. In any case, we took steps to make sure the native PZP cannot be patented for use in wildlife and continue to use it under the FDA INAD. That is a far cry from Mr. Feaser's gaunt description.

Now let's add to that, that this vaccine has been around for about 35 years and much of the research focused on human contraception. It never made it to that market because (1) no one has been able to synthesize the product; it must be laboriously produced by what we refer to as "bench chemistry" on a very small scale. The failure to produce a synthetic form of the vaccine meant that a large human market could never be serviced. We labor here to manufacture about 5,000 doses a year. The second reason it never made it to the human market was the variability in the time for the antifertility effects to reverse. We see that all the time, in wild horses and deer and about 100 species of zoo animals that are currently under treatment. All the pharmaceutical companies could see was litigation. Neither of those constraints represent a safety issue, after 35 years.

Let's examine the safety issue just a little bit more. The vaccine has been used on the wild horses of Assateague Island National Seashore, in Maryland, for 18 years now, and what safety issues have arisen? Well, first, the body condition scores of the population have increased significantly (see Turner and Kirkpatrick. 2002. Reproduction. (Suppl. 60):187-195), mortality has decreased significantly (same paper), the vaccine has proven to be safe to give to pregnant animals (see Kirkpatrick et al. 1991. J. Reprod. Fert. (Suppl. 44) 321-325), doesn't cause changes in seasonal birth patterns or the health of foals born to treated mothers (see Kirklpatrick et al. J. Appl. Anim. Welfare Sci. 6:301-308) and has extended the longevity of the treated horses by more than 10 years (see Kirkpatrick and Turner 2002. J. Reprod. Fert. (Suppl. 60): 197-202; Kirkpatrick and Turner 2007. Zoo Biol. 25:1-8), nor have any behavioral changes been noted (see Powell 1999. J. Appl. Anim. Welfare Sci. 2:321-335) nor have there been any deleterious physiological changes regarding the ovary or endocrine system (see Kirkpatrick et al. 1995. Biol. Reprod. Monograph Series I: Equine Reproduction VI: 411-418; Powell and Monfort 2001. J. Appl. Anim. Welfare Sci. 4:271-284) I could go on, and cite dozens of other papers regarding the use and safety of this vaccine in other species (some 50 of them, including a lot of primates) but I think the point is made. Finally, the vaccine is a protein and ninth grade biology students who are paying attention in class know that proteins can't pass through the food chain. Does this all sound unsafe?

This explanation is a far cry from Mr. Feaser's attempt to use a sound byte, but that is what is necessary if we are to truly understand what is going on. While I must live with sound bytes and slogans from my politicians, I don't intend to accept that form of discourse in the scientific world. Let's move on.

Next. Mr. Feaser tackles the economic dimensions of deer contraception. He quotes a figure of $1,000 per deer. The cost of the vaccine is $21/dose (we, by law, must provide it at our cost of production, with no profit), the dart costs about $1.50, and the bulk of the labor to do the darting is where the real cost lies. Costs will vary from site to site, depending on who is doing the work and what they are paid. If you want to pay someone $80,000 a year to dart deer, the cost will be high; if you want to use trained volunteers the cost is less; if you use employees already employed by a park, or agency, or whatever, the cost is somewhere between. I actually can't say what the costs would be in any given site because of these variables, but I kept the books for the first two years of the Fire Island project and the costs never exceeded $10,000. That included a two or three air fares from Ohio and Montana to New York, and we treated about 150 deer. My math shows that to come out to about $66/deer. I wonder who estimated the $1,000 per deer.

Now Mr. Feaser goes on to say that "Research also suggests that the use of hunting alone or in combination with other management actions, may be the only way to effectively reduce free-ranging deer populations". If Mr. Feaser is talking about the deer in Potter County, or even all of Bucks County, I might agree, but we are not talking about the deer in Potter County or all of Bucks County. we are still talking about discrete urban/suburban deer populations. This is one more attempt to confuse the issues. And, if Mr. Feaser bothers to read the papers cited above, he knows that his statement is not factual.

He closes with descriptions of deer contraception as unproven (not accurate- see above), experimental (true, see above) and cost prohibitive (not accurate, see above).

I am not dismayed by the passion that accompanies this subject, nor am I dismayed if a community chooses not to use contraception. That is local business and not mine. What does upset me, is knowingly manipulating information, hyperbole, attempts to frighten people with skewed information and an anti-intellectual approach to debates that excludes facts and data and substitute opinion. Does any of that sound familiar on a larger scale?

Incidentally, lest anyone attempts to pigeonhole me in some social activist group, I have hunted deer for most of my life and I started in Bucks County more than 50 years ago.

"I've taken 50 plus deer with my bow, and I've never had one run more than 10 yards or live longer than 30 seconds. My 14-year-old son took one last weekend, and it was four seconds before it went down. It's very quick."

When they say "it went down" does not mean the animal is dead and in "tracking deer after shot" website you can clearly see that the animals suffer and die a horrible painful death especially in the hands of bowhunters. notice how uncaring and unmerciful these monsters are . Bowhunted animals do not die "quick" whether be Elks, Deer, Bear, Antelope etc. that is why you always hear bowhunter say "give it time" meaning time for the animals to die.

"After shooting the deer, stay in your stand and be quiet for the recommended time. A noise might push your deer away. He could be bedded down less than 100 yards away.

The deer could be "filling up" inside with blood, showing very little external bleeding. The hair from the lung area is coarse and brown with black tips. The deer will usually go down in less than 125 yards. Give the deer 30 minutes before tracking.

A heart-shot deer will sometimes jump wildly when hit. The blood trail may be sparse for the first 20 yards or so. A heart shot deer may track as much as a quarter of a mile, depending on what part of the heart is damaged. The usual is less than 125 yards. The hair from this shot will be long brown or grayish guard hairs. Again, a 30 minute wait is advised. But, if while trailing you find where he has bedded back off and wait an hour before taking up the trail again.

If the deer is dead in an hour, he will still be dead in 4 hours. Have patience, he will not go anywhere. Wait him out for at least 4 hours. Wait overnight if the deer isshot in the evening.

If a spine-shot deer hobbles off, wait a half-hour and track slowly and quietly. Look for the deer bedded down.

A liver-shot deer. The liver lies against the diaphragm in the approximate center of the deer. It is a definite killing shot. The blood trail will be decent to follow and the deer should bed down and die within 200 yards, if not pushed. A one-hour wait is best. The hair from the liver area is brownish gray and much shorter than the hair from the lung area. If you push the deer out of his bed, back off and wait another hour.

Animals, especially deer, do not start bleeding at the point of impact. The blood trail generally starts about 15 to 30 yards from where the point of impact is. I have seen deer that were "high" lung shot that never bled a drop outside the body! And a heavy blood trail takes a while due to the chest cavity having to fill up before the blood can exit the wound.

Once the paunch (stomach) is ruptured, semi digested food and stomach bacteria enter the body cavity. This makes the deer sick and it will eventually lay down where it will expire after a long time. Blood loss is minimal and slow and will almost always be internal. These reasons are why one should wait a minimum of 8 hours before attempting to track a gut shot deer. "

An hour isn't long enough for a gut shot deer, you should of left and came back in the morning. And tracked it. You don't have to have blood to track and most gut shot deer don't bleed out because the fat will clog the hole.

The total number will never be known because there's no federal requirement that all cases be reported. Preliminary studies suggest, and some neurologists suspect, that CJD is more common than generally believed -- it's simply misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's. That raises the obvious question: How many people would die of chronic wasting disease before a doctor called it?
In a highly publicized case, three Wisconsin hunters who attended wild-game feasts died of neurological diseases. Two had Creutzfeldt-Jakob, one turned out to have another rare neurological ailment, Pick's disease. Tests are ongoing.
Another victim from Oklahoma died with a freezer full of venison. A 50-year-old Montana elk hunter died last summer; his brain tissue is now being analyzed at one of the world's foremost prion labs, at the University of California in San Francisco. Test results are pending.

Can humans catch 'Mad Deer Disease'?

"Our own nightmare here in the United States is chronic wasting disease of deer," Dr. Corrie Brown said yesterday at the 103rd national meeting of the American Society for Microbiology. Brown, of the University of Georgia in Athens, is an expert on infectious diseases in animals which are used as food.
Chronic wasting disease, also termed "Mad Deer Disease," is caused by a strange infectious protein -- termed a prion (pree-on). CWD also occurs in elk.
It's a cousin of the prions responsible for fatal brain diseases in other animals and humans. Among them are Mad Cow Disease, or bovine spongiform encephalitis, which decimated cattle herds in the United Kingdom and Europe in the 1990s and spread to people who ate infected beef.
About 130 people in Britain have developed the human version of Mad Cow Disease, which is known as variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The infection is fatal, usually within 2 years after symptoms appear. Estimates of the human toll during the next 80 years range from 540 to 50,000.

Human incubation is 20 to 40 years, but no one survives more than two years after Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) goes active. Unlike AIDS, CJD can kill almost all known species of vertebrates. Unlike bacteria or virus, Prions are not killed by several minutes of boiling, baking, chlorine, alcohol or by any known antibiotic or antiviral agent.

What Soffe and other morticians also worry about are the cases of undiagnosed CJD. The disease is difficult to diagnose without a brain biopsy or autopsy -- and CJD has symptoms nearly identical to Alzheimer's. There is evidence that some cases of Alzheimer's have been misdiagnosed CJD cases. Often cited is a Yale study that found that six of 46 people who reportedly died from Alzheimer's actually had CJD.

More Serious than AIDS: Creutzfeldt-Jakob

Sterilization does not kill prions. They can take extreamly high temperatures even surviving cremation and become released into the air after such burning. Prions are virtually indestructible. Hundreds of scientific reports describe how prions cannot be frozen to death, do not respond to any antibiotics or chemical treatments and withstand temperatures of approximately 1000 degrees F. However, only one study ever done (or released to the public...) on invasive, reusable medical (tonsillectomy) instruments in the UK, over 50% of the instruments were found to be contaminated with deadly prions AFTER REPEATED STERILIZATIONS.

Mad cow disease, chronic wasting disease and similar ailments are all thought to be caused by misshapen forms of special proteins known as prions. In the case of chronic wasting, research shows infection can occur even by proximity to sick deer.

In areas infected with CWD, up to 10 percent or more of deer are found to carry the disease.
Both are transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, or TSEs. They can both be passed from animal to animal, though by different means, and are thought to be caused by misshapen forms of proteins known as prions. These deformed prions eat holes in a creature's brain, inevitably leading todeath.

At the same time, the CDC acknowledged several puzzling cases of patients who died of neurological diseases after eating wild game. In 2003, doctors at the VA Hospital in Seattle reported Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in three hunters; the CDC would not investigate, saying there was no evidence the men ate tainted meat. A 2002 study documented three Wisconsin men who regularly ate venison and took part in large "game feasts"; two were diagnosed with CJD and one was diagnosed with Pick's disease, a form of dementia.

CWD is spreading

The disease was long thought to be limited in the wild to a relatively small endemic area in northeastern Colorado, southeastern Wyoming and southwestern Nebraska, but it has recently been found in new areas of these states, as well as in wild deer and elk in western South Dakota, and wild deer in northern Illinois, south-central New Mexico, northeastern and central Utah, south-central and south-eastern Wisconsin, central New York, north-east West Virginia, Kansas and west and south-central Saskatchewan. Also, CWD positive moose has recently been discovered in the endemic area of Colorado

Hunters turn up CWD in W.Va. deer herd

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Preliminary test results indicate the chronic wasting disease (CWD) agent was present in five hunter-harvested deer collected in Hampshire County, W.Va., during the 2008 deer firearms hunting season.

“As part of our agency’s ongoing and intensive CWD monitoring effort, samples were collected from 1,355 hunter-harvested deer brought to game checking stations in Hampshire County and one station near the southern Hampshire County line in Hardy County,” noted Frank Jezioro, director for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

The five CWD positive deer included one 4.5 year-old doe, two 2.5 year-old bucks, one 4.5 year-old buck and one 1.5 year-old buck.

Harvest area

All five of the latest positive deer were harvested within the Hampshire County CWD Containment Area, that portion of Hampshire County located north of U.S. Route 50.

However, the CWD agent previously has been detected outside the containment area but still within Hampshire County.

The area in Hampshire County appears to continue to expand as one of the most recent infected deer was approximately 5 miles northeast of any previous known infected deer location.

Detection
The disease has now been detected in a total of 37 deer in Hampshire County — two road-killed deer, one in 2005 and one in 2008; four deer collected by the DNR in 2005; five deer collected by the DNR in 2006; one hunter-harvest deer taken during the 2006 deer season; three deer collected by the DNR in 2007; six hunter-harvested deer taken during the 2007 deer season; 11 deer collected by the DNR in 2008; and five hunter-harvested deer taken during the 2008 deer season.

So how do you safely dispose of stricken animals?

It isn't as simple as burying their carcasses, or even incinerating them.

Prions are simply proteins, not living organisms, and they can survive almost anything, even hundreds of degrees of heat. Placing infected tissue in a landfill simply removes it, but scientists worry that the prions can leach through soil and groundwater, and spread.

Incineration is possible, but it isn't as easy as burning the carcass in a fire. Temperatures of more than 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit — sometimes up to 1,800 degrees — are required to effectively neutralize prions. Unlike most bacteria, regular cooking won't help at all.

Even many of sterilization techniques used in hospitals, such as autoclaving, are not necessarily effective — though some may be when infected material is dipped in sodium hydroxide, or lye and heated well above the boiling point of water.

A combination of heat — about 275 degrees Fahrenheit — and bursts of unimaginably high pressure — over 100,000 psi — showed promise in reducing prion infectivity, at least in processed meats like hot dogs, in research published last year.

And a similar method has become the default process for getting rid of infected animals. Large vat-like machines known as alkaline hydrolysis tissue digesters, one of which Powers' lab operates, can essentially dissolve entire carcasses.

Infected material is placed in a solution of potassium hydroxide — also known as caustic potash — for at least six hours, at 300 degrees Fahrenheit and 60 psi, about four times ambient air pressure.

All remains at the end is a sterile brown, syrupy liquid that can be hauled away to compost.
"It's like a big steam cooker," Powers says. "That'll take care of the prions."

"Disposal issues are tough," says Barbara Powers, director of Colorado State University's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

I was amazed to discover that a Texan accountant had won a prize from the Boone and Crocket Club for bagging a trophy whitetail deer and then he was exposed when it was discovered that the rack of an animal stolen from a taxidermist in Alberta had been surgically grafted onto a smaller animal on a game farm in Mexico where they flushed it out from cover into the sights of the “great hunters” rifle.

It was John Muir, the founder of the Sierra Club who first described hunting as “the murder business.”

In a few places in the world people hunt for survival. In the past, people were forced to hunt for survival. The constituency the Sierra Club is now courting through its killer outreach program are not people who have a need to hunt for survival.

They are people who spend more money on weaponry, travel and related expenses than the value of the meat they obtain. It is not the meat they are after but the thrill of the kill.

Dick Cheney, when not shooting lawyers, describes how he loves to see the ducks tumble from the sky. I’ve heard hunters describe how pulling the trigger gives them an erection.

These are men who slaughter for pleasure. I call them perverse death deviants and I have no apologies for labeling them as such. Killing for pleasure is a sickness, no different than child molestation or rape.

There is no sport in killing an animal from a distance with a sophisticated tool designed to inflict death. The name sportsman implies that there is a fair contest. There is nothing fair about being ripped apart by high powered bullets.

Hunters target the biggest, the strongest and the best of the species they pursue. This is behavior outside the laws of ecology. It is unnatural predation and certainly cannot be condoned by credible conservationists.

Hunters defend their perverse desire to extinguish life by saying it is traditional. Unfortunately many barbaric practices are traditional. However, modern day hunting bears little relation to so called traditional hunting. Hunters today are more akin to those who eradicated the bison and took only the tongues.

Hunters were responsible for the extinction of the Labrador duck, the Passenger Pigeon, the Eastern Bison, the Plains Wolf and the extirpation of the Grizzly from most of the lower 48 states. They were not only killers they were involved in the act of specicide – the complete eradication of entire species. This was not conservation.

Hunters cite Theodore Roosevelt as a big game hunter who was also a conservationist. This is true, he was both. He lived in a time when killing for pleasure was accepted but it was also a time when racism was accepted as normal and it was considered abnormal for women to have any rights, especially the right to vote. Roosevelt did set aside land to conserve much in the same way that the British aristocracy set aside land as exclusive hunting preserves to keep out the lower classes.

The Sierra Club is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to reach out to invite killers to join the Club. The leadership of the Club believes that the over 80% of Club members who don’t take pleasure from killing must be tolerant of the less than 20% who do. They want to bring in more killers into the Club.

There is a big difference between hunting and killing. Photographers and film makers can hunt wildlife. It actually takes more skill to hunt a Mountain sheep with a camera than with a rifle. Any nimrod can pull a trigger and send a high velocity bullet unexpectedly into living tissue to shatter organs and induce shock. The photographer brings back nobility, a creature caught in its natural habitat in harmony with the world around it.

The killer watches his victim tumble from the air or crash to the ground as it chokes and gurgles on its own life blood. The photographer brings back life. The hunter brings back death.

I have been a hunter myself. I’ve never killed anything but I have stalked and hunted human poachers. I have destroyed their ships, their rifles, their nets, their longlines and their harpoons. I have snatched clubs from the bloody hands of sealers and defended myself from their attacks. My form of hunting is much fairer and gutsier than these killers who prey upon their unsuspecting and innocent victims. I target the guilty not the innocent.

Once I trekked with Kenyan rangers across the plains of Tsavo on the track of poachers. We followed their trail of elephant carcasses rotting on the ground with only their tusks removed. We found the criminals. They fired on us and killed one of our rangers. We did not kill them. We wounded two and arrested seven. They were armed with AK-47 rifles and our rangers were armed with British Enfield 303’s. We were up against a superior foe and we beat them. It was not sport. It was not fun. It was dangerous and necessary work and the objective was to save lives, not to extinguish lives.

That is the only kind of hunting that makes sense today in a world with a human population approaching seven billion. If every American exercised their “right” to kill, the ducks, geese, quail, elk, deer and other creatures would disappear quite quickly. There are simply to many of us and not very many of them.

It can hardly be an egalitarian sport if only a minority of citizens can realistically participate. Instead of encouraging hunting, groups like the Sierra Club should be discouraging the number of hunters. The nation and the world needs fewer killers of wildlife – not more.

In Europe over a hundred million songbirds are gunned down every year. Elephant populations have been reduced by 70% in East Africa since I worked on poaching patrols there in 1978. World fisheries are in a state of collapse. Wildlife is getter scarcer and there is more need now than ever for protection.

Why can’t we protect wetlands simply because wetlands need to be protected? Why is there this demand that killers are needed to help protect wetlands simply because they want to slaughter ducks? Canada geese mate for life. Shouldn’t it bother us that we shatter tens of thousands of these relationships every year? Why should we tolerate the accumulation of lead and steel shot in the marshes and estuaries? Why should we tolerate the legal murder of human beings that we label as hunting accidents, especially when the victim is a non-killer, perhaps a child some nimrod has mistaken for a deer.

The son of Sigmund Freud was walking on his own property in Quebec when a hunter shot and killed him. The killer was found not guilty because the death was ruled an “accident”.

When a stranger can kill you on your own land and get away with it, it demonstrates that our tolerance for this legal killing has gone over the top of acceptability.

One killer wrote me to say that my “radical anti-hunting” ideas were unacceptable for a member of the Board of the Sierra Club. When did opposition to killing, to the taking of life, to the extinguishment of a living creature, to the wasting of a sentient being become a radical idea?

Sometimes I think we live in such a bizarre world where advocates for life are considered radical and proponents of death are considered normal, where violence is considered acceptable and non-violence is dismissed as unpatriotic or cowardly.

Few killers question the morality of their actions. Once you have reached a stage where you can inflict cruelty and death, thoughts of morality, empathy and respect have long since vanished.

For if a killer of a deer could feel the pain and anguish of his victim or see the fawn starve because of a mother that did not return they would have little appetite for the meat.

Humans who have crossed the line into dealing death and inflicting misery have become alienated from the wonderment of life and no longer see or appreciate the magic of being alive.

Life is to be cherished, protected, defended and championed, not to be wantonly and cruelly destroyed, and certainly not for so frail an excuse as pleasure or sport.

The DAA/IC concept: Anthony Marr's new project idea - DAA/IC

I conceived this new IC deleivery method over the last 3 years - since I took up the fight in the urban deer culling issue back in 2006 in OH/PA. I have invented a system called DAA/IC, standing for Deer-Auto-Assembler/Immuno-Contraception, which the hunters dread like the plague, but which they have so far prevented from being field deployed. There are 3 reasons for this:

1. Opposition from hunters, because the DAA/IC, once field implemented, will erase all their excuses to hunt deer in urban, suburban and semi-rural areas, as well as urban parks. Since immunocontraceptive vaccines have been approved by both the FDA and the EPA, the area of the hunters' attack has been the labor-intensiveness and expensiveness of the current vaccine delivery systems (see below).

2. Opposition from simplistic ideological groups like Friends of Animals against IC, spearheaded by people like Lee Hall, who maintains that unlike cats and dogs, deer are wild, and should not be interfered with, without regard for the fact that they have already been negatively interfered with by the hunters and farmers who have eradicated the natural predators, and who in fact deliberately cultivate a high deer population by means of food-plots for hunting purposes.

3. The lack of a working model. I have made presentations on this device to about a dozen city councils and even county executives. As they were listening, I could see that they were personally intrigued by the idea, but they are usually hunter-influenced, and their challenge to see a working model cannot be met, since, the idea being original, there is none.

At least not in America. Back in the late 1990s, I worked in 3 tigers reserves in India, and the idea originally stemmed from there. One of the problems to deal with was deer (Cheetal) coming out of the parks to raid the surrounding farm land. One of my challenges was to round them up and move them back into the park. Considering that they are extremely fleet-footed, the only thing that could work was the Deer Auto Assembler

The Deer Auto Assembler (DAA)

The DAA is an extremely simple device, comprising nothing more than fencing and one-way gates.

The DAA I set up in India was no bigger than a basketball court. I installed one inward-facing one-way gate on each side of the enclosure, put some food inside, and just let it sit. Within days, the DAA would be full of deer, which we then transported back into the park. How this could be used to combat the hunters and solve deer population problems is as follows:

Suppose there is an urban park 2-sq.mi. (1280 acres) in size. Suppose independent biologists estimate (average of at least 3) that the carrying capacity of the park is 20 deer per sq.mi. The maximum number of deer in the park without negative environmental impact then is 20 x 2 = 40.

Suppose an accurate deer count has been performed, and the deer population has been determined to be 70. The government would announce that 70 - 40 = 30 deer need to be "culled", and the bow-hunters would "volunteer" themselves to do it for free as a service to the community. The truth of course is that the whole thing is initiated by hunters from the start, for hunting purposes.

Of course, carrying capacities are usually estimated conservatively. If the population has been culled down to 40, it often would mean that it is below the carrying capacity, and the population would re-expand according to the Compensatory Rebound Effect, and the culling will return thereafter, year after year, as the hunters want it.

My solution is as follows:

1. Set up a DAA of about 10-50 acres, preferably in a scenic wooded area, using deer fence (8' min.) and inward one-way gates. Place food inside the gates and let it sit, while keeping count. After 30 deer have entered the DAA, close the gates.

2. Apply IC on the deer inside the DAA: A sub-mechanism of the DAA is a small internal compartment in one corner with an inward one-way gate, where the deer can be easily immunized and tagged., then released back into the main part of the DAA.

The inward one-way gate into the compartment leads into a narrow chute through which only one deer could pass at a time. The chute ends at a feeding trough, beside which is an outward one-way gate operated manually by an operator.

The chute should be draped in black fabric so that the deer will be calm, with the human operator concealed from view. At the food trough, where the feeding deer's rump would be, a U-shaped incision is cut in the fabric, creating a hole covered by a flap. When the deer is feeding, the flap is lifted, the pellet is injected, the tag is attached, and the deer is returned to the main body of the DAA through the exit gate.

Inside the dark chamber, the injection would be no more alarming to the deer than a black-fly bite. No man-handling is required. The deer is not stressed, and is very definitely marked as having been immunized. Other than constructing the DAA initially, very little human labor is needed to operate it.

Some new advances have been made for the delivery of solid pellets by darting, but the draw-backs of darting remain, and nothing yet is better than the DAA for effectiveness, efficiency and economy.

3. Feed the deer inside the DAA to keep them healthy and prevent environmental damage. An observation tower can be built inside the DAA for wildlife viewing purposes.

4. The following year, do another deer count. Suppose the number counted is, say, 60, then let 20 into the DAA, again leaving 40 outside, and immunize the 20. Deer life span averages 3-4 years in the wild. In the absence of predation, it would be longer, but by 7 years of age, their teeth would have been worn down to next to nothing. So over the years, the older deer will die off, the population inside the DAA will decline and stabilize at the level maintained by the yearly infusion of younger deer.

Problem solved, without any deer needing to be killed in any given year.

It's proven difficult to persuade any government to use their own city park or urban area as a testing ground for an "untried" idea, so, we'll have to set up a working model on a piece of private land where land is cheap and deer are considered overabundant. If such a piece of land and start-up money be available (mainly for fencing), the DAA can be set up immediately. IC is inexpensive if performed by volunteers, each 3-year dose of vaccine costing less than $50. The project should run for about 5 years minimum.

Once the concept is proven, I see no way any government could logically refuse to at least give it a try in their own parks and urban/suburb areas. And if luck is with us, we might even be able to find one government willing to try out the concept in a problem area, especially if we offer to fund and run the project as a pilot ourselves.

A friend of mine wrote me an e-mail about a pregnant doe found in her friend’s property. She took her camera to video tape the blood trail of the poor suffered deer which went for almost a half a mile. The blood trail was on the road too, which shows how bow hunting can cause Deer Vehicle Accidents. She also traveled quite a distance trying to survive– maybe for the sake of her unborn. An article entitled Bow Wounding Losses THE BIG MYTH by David Samuel states: It is disquieting to know that we probably wound one deer for every animal harvested. Samuel also states: The only reason I can think of is that bow hunting is difficult, more so than gun hunting. Some non-thinking bow hunters apparently feel its better to say that they at least hit a deer than admit they didn’t harvest one. That’s really dumb logic and every time someone says they wound a deer to anyone else, even a bow hunter friend, it gives the wrong message to anyone who is listening.

Bowhunting of Elk outraged and shocked the public and bowhunters were not very happy

Bowhunters were not upset about the animal suffering because they know this is how bowhunted sentient being die. They are upset because the public has seen it with their own eyes how horrific the death is by an arrow and as you know bowhunters do their darnest to try and convince the public that bowhunted deer die a "quick death" and are "ethically harvested" as if the use of all those whitewash words are going to cover the truth. Truth needs to be shown and as horrible and sad their death was I am glad people saw it, I am glad photos was taken and was aired on the news. I did my share after a friend of mine Jason Miller told me about the Elk bowhunting and told me to go ASAP to grab the photos and put it into youtube and that is just what I did. The view counters went up very quickly and noticed that bowhunters has been talking about it too like I said not because of the concern for the suffering of the sentient animal but because the public saw and was disgusted by it and you know bowhunters reputation is already tarnished as is with so many other bowhunting incidents and the public are pretty much fed up with them.

Overall this is how millions of our wildlife dies in the forest and parks every year during bowhunting season. This is the pain and suffering the pro-kill Government put them thru so lowlife humans with the minds of serial killers can be "sportsman" and DNR can rake in their billions of dollars not to benefit the non-killing public but to benefit themselves by creating more land to use as a killing field and to propagate game animals to kill for recreation. As Anthony Marr said "We will never have a great Nation when our Nation is run by serial killers for fun".

Skagit County elk slaughter enrages readers

Fish and Wildlife need to step it up, do their job

The article on the elk slaughter near Concrete [“Trapping, killing of elk closes hunting,” NWWednesday, Dec. 29] highlights the mismanagement of our wildlife by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. This type of thing probably happens all too often, but this time it was captured on camera and in full view of the public.

The department said the bow-and-arrow wounding and slaughtering of the trapped elk was legal. If true, then we need new laws to prevent it.

Fish and Wildlife is responsible for the slaughter. In their never-ending quest to expand hunting opportunities, they relocated elk to the Skagit Valley. They then authorized this year’s hunt, after last year’s fiasco with muzzle-loader hunters.

According to the department’s own numbers, hunting mortality, including wounding loss and poaching, is by far the greatest source of elk mortality — 64 to 82 percent —of which poaching makes up 15 percent. This clearly defies the state mandate in RCW 77.04.012 to preserve, protect and perpetuate our state’s wildlife.

The hunters were unethical, but Fish and Wildlife should have never allowed the hunt in the first place. Then when it got really ugly, the agent should have stopped it.

State not as enlightened as I had thought

Wow. I moved up here from Texas and I keep thinking Washington in general — and the Seattle area in particular — is enlightened. I feel as if someone punched me in the stomach after reading this article.

What a disgusting spectacle of wanton cruelty that had nothing — nothing —to do with so-called sportsmanship. Seven animals were killed in circumstances resembling an appalling canned hunt, but what of those who were injured but managed to flee?

How long will it take them to die of blood loss and infection and exposure in the middle of winter? What of the female who was trailing loops of entrails?

How can this seem like an OK recreational activity to anyone? I am utterly sickened.

Rethinking how we treat wild animals

The article “Bow hunters shoot elk in Wash. pasture” [Seattletimes...com, Local News, Dec. 29] mentioned that a few of the animals had arrows embedded in their hides and were bleeding, but were still upright and running.

Sadly, this is an example of how these animals really die. It’s never as clean-cut as hunters would have you believe. In some cases, it can take days.

This wasn’t a case of necessity, it never is.

Bill Johnson said he didn’t necessarily regret the kills, however, some were messy and caused undue pain to the animals. This doesn’t sound like fun.

Maybe we need to rethink how wild animals are treated, and consider that we have to place some of the blame on ourselves for creating these situations in the first place.

We simply cannot push these animals in the corner in order to satisfy our own population growth.

Should Hunting be held accountable for human injuries and death from DVA?

Human Fatality in DVA is Murder One

"Over 1.5 million deer/vehicle crashes occur per year in the U.S., causing over $1.1 billion in vehicle damage, more than 29,000 human injuries and 150 deaths." (See red below)

Statistics may be boring, but they are consistent. It dictates that given 30 million deer roaming across the land, and given 3-trillion vehicle-miles per year on American highways, and, not least of all, given a hunting reason entertaining 1.5 million hunters in Pennsylvania alone, and 15 million across the land, which causes deer to blindly dash out of forests into the path of speeding vehicles in evasion of the lethal human intruders the hunters, there WILL be about 1.5 million deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) or deer-vehicle accidents (DVAs), which WILL cost about 1.5 million deer lives and about 150 human lives, plus about 30,000 human injuries.

According to hunting sources, there were originally about 30 million white-tailed deer in America. History went through a period of unregulated "market hunting", which decimated the deer population to some 300,000 nation-wide, and zero in certain states including Indiana. Since then, the deer population had rebounded back to its original number of about 30 million, but in a much reduced area, due to human occupation of their previous range, including vast tracks of farm land that used to the deer habitat. This creates an over-....population density situation, which causes ecological damage as well as human deaths.

This begs the question as to how this could be possible and how it could have happened. The answer is that the deer population is being inadvertantly as well as intentionally cultivated to overpopulation densities by human manipulation of the environment. Inadvertantly, due to clearcut logging, which opens up broad expanses of sunlit pastures rich in deer food, and intentionally, due to the deliberate super-feeding of deer by means of food plots, basically clearcut areas deliberately seeded with deer food crops.

And this begs the question as to why. The answer is this: There are 300 million Americans, of which only about 6% hunt, which, though a small minority, still amount to 15 million hunters, most of whom hunt deer, each targeting at least one, requiring 15 million deer to give them the baseline satisfaction. The departments of Natural Resources and of Wildlife in some states also impose the rule that to get a buck, a hunter must first kill one or more does. Plus the temptation that the more licenses and permits the state sells, the greater the revenue. All in all, Pennsylvania alone requires some1.5 million deer per year to satisfy its 1.5 million hunters, and America requires 10-....million-plus deer to satisfy the 10-....million-plus deer hunters. Thus, the food plots across the American semi-wild landscape.

And thus the high deer-vehicle collision rates, and deer deaths, and human deaths.

I repeat. Statistics dictates that given the deer overpopulation,.... and the vehicle-mile volume, and the deer hunting season, there WILL be so many human deaths.

And I repeat - human deaths.

The policy makers should understand this, or they are incompetent. If they are not incompetent, the only logical conclusion is that the accidents and collisions are deliberately caused, collateral damage, as it were. It follows that the human casualties and fatalities are themselves deliberately caused. This is legal in war, but not in peace. Is Pennsylvania at war? If not, then a serious crime has been commited. It is called premeditated murder, Murder One.

Maybe even a crime of terrorism, because we never know when and where a DVA will occur, only that it will happen, and innocent people will be hurt or killed. And they have been hit, and killed.

I suggest getting all the families of the accident victims together and launching a class lawsuit for wrongful death.

I hope that my logic has held up. As to doing it. Well, will the pro bono lawyers line up please?
